What is soil health, and why is your yield stuck?

Ask any older farmer in Banaskantha or Mehsana and they will tell you: twenty years ago, one bag of urea did more than two bags do today. The land takes more and gives back less. That is not bad luck. It is soil health.
Soil is not just dirt
A handful of healthy soil contains billions of living things — bacteria, fungi, tiny insects, earthworms. This underground life does real work for your crop:
- Bacteria fix nitrogen from the air and unlock phosphorus stuck in the soil.
- Fungi stretch out from roots like extra pipelines for water and nutrients.
- Earthworms and insects loosen the soil so roots and water can move.
When this life is active, your soil is soft, dark, holds water after rain, and feeds your crop steadily through the season.
What heavy chemical use does
Chemical fertilizer is not poison in one dose — the problem is what years of heavy use do:
- Salts build up. Many fertilizers are salts. Season after season, they make the soil harder and more alkaline.
- The microbes go quiet. When nitrogen arrives free from a bag, nitrogen-fixing bacteria stop working. When fungicides soak the soil, helpful fungi die alongside harmful ones.
- Organic matter burns away. Without crop residue, compost or dung going back in, the soil's "food" runs out and its structure collapses.
- You need more every year. Dead soil holds nothing, so more of what you spend washes away with the next irrigation.
This is why input costs climb while yields stay flat.
The way back
Soil health can be rebuilt — farmers across Gujarat are doing it. The steps are simple, and you do not have to change everything in one season:
- Return organic matter: compost, farmyard manure, crop residue.
- Reduce chemical doses step by step — not all at once.
- Reintroduce the workers: biofertilizers put nitrogen-fixing bacteria, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi back into the soil.
- Keep the soil covered and avoid burning residue.
